Terroir
All the property is established on “lower molasses of the Resident of Agen” i.e. on carbonated clays and feldspathic micaceous sandstones. One of the characteristics of the soil is to profit from a very important silica outcrop which gives a certain acidity on the ground. The general exposure is full south and all the pieces are in more or less accentuated slopes. Encépagement: Important replantings which took place since 1991 made it possible to create homogeneous farming sets with qualitative vines adapted to the conditions of the soil (grounds very limestones and acids). Today, the white vines represent 14 hectares including 15% in Sauvignon, 50% in Sémillon and 35% in Muscadelle. The whole property is planted in narrow vines with 5000 feet/hectare.

History
Built by the English during “the One hundred year old War” towards the end of the XIII° century, this old fortified house was used as a basis advanced for the one of the largest castles of Périgord destroyed during the wars of religion, the Castle of Montcuq. On the first chart of Belen, one sees that 2 activities were established near Grande Maison; the vine and size of stone runners for the mills of the area. Henry IV, in 1608 made gift of the property to a lawyer of Bergerac, Charles de Livardie. Thierry Després became owner into 1990 of the buildings and a field of 10 hectares including 4 in vines in very bad condition. Since, thanks to purchases and exchanges, the property took again its former size. Today, it counts 20 hectares including 15 of vines because of a vigorous policy of qualitative replanting. |

HARVEST 2010 I am currently completing the harvest. This 2010 vintage is exceptional in more ways than one.
This is a particularly dry year because practically, between July and September 20, there has been no significant rain.
In early August, the weather was cold and dry for 15 days which is very rare.
The rest of the summer was hot without a heat wave.
The results may be enough today "bluffing".
Dry white wines are very rich as 2003 with a remarkable and qualitative acidity. For me, it should be better than 2007 or 2008 (though "favorite" Guide Hachette).
The rosé is perfect, fresh, rich and aromatic.
Red wines were made with yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, which is 30% below my average. The perfect maturity associated with very good health conditions provide excellent wines. They are very rich, powerful and very complex. Excellent year!
For Monbazillac, the very dry year produces wines very pleasant with plenty of fruit as 1988. The botritys was low throughout the season. The wine will be perfect for " cuvée des Anges" but for the other "cuvées" it remains to be seen!

On July 28, 2007, Grande Maison has received a representation of “la fille du regiment” of Donizetti. Under the direction of Richard Beswick, 33 musicians and 20 chorus-singers framed very good soloists of which the splendid soprano Marie-Olivera TOPALOVIC.
It was a great success. The talent of the interpreters found excellent "accoustique" on the southern plate close to the house. This event has chances to reproduce the next year. The Opera and the good wine agree well.
